biography
It's not easy needing a ton of sleep and also being a full-time cook. Especially when full-time often means overtime and no pay, or working 7 days a week just because it's a busy season. Caroline learned this from her parents, two hardworking cooks - her father a chef - who worked together in the restaurant she now effectively owns. They left, of course, when they retired, to go live in some prairie town where things could be "normal," as if that was possible. Their daughter was a go-getter, a hardworking kid they knew they could trust with the family business - and so Caroline went from line cook to Chef within a month.
She's not an amazing cook, but she has personality and style and figures the rest of the talent can come later. Much of her time is spent studying and practicing, or at least, when she's not immersed in her self-taught guitar lessons. Add "aspiring rock star" to the list of things Caroline cannot hope to accomplish while also needing 12 hours of sleep every day. She's quite sure that even if she weren't Magi, she'd still need at least 10 in order to function properly, so trying to push herself past 13 is just not doable.
Her various skills, which help her run a kitchen nearly entirely on her own, were taught to her by her parents - stirring, whisking, turning the dials on a stove to the right spot and making sure it's going to go off at the right time, plating dishes... she does none of it by hand. That would be a waste of time. Besides the whisking of her fingers and the occasional spinning around in circles in the kitchen wondering what she has to do next, the only real interaction Caroline has with the food is tasting. The rest is taken care of, as long as she can keep herself organized. Multi-tasking has become an art. Or, not getting distracted - either way, she can handle it.
Caroline lives in her own flat, purchased and paid for by her retired and relatively well-off parents. Her money goes towards more clothes, instruments, or gifts that she mails off out of town to mum and pa, since they gave her a living. Though sometimes, she can't help but wonder what it would have been like if she'd been taught to fly instead of cook.
