biography
coltan had always been a rather curious child, though his upbringing in a tinkerer's shop definitely had something to do with that. from a very young age, he'd learned to question everything - even the things that seemed to be so concrete and undeniably true. the immovable had never been so fluid, the unchanging so temporary until he'd simply decided never to accept anything at face value, and this is something that has stuck with colt over the years. many often think him to be untrusting because of the way he will almost always double check an unknown fact or try it for himself despite being told of the outcome. in reality, he's simply too curious to take someone's word for it, needing to see it for himself, to discover it for himself.
throughout his childhood he was raised to take over the modest shop at the docks, and it was a fate he was more than happy to fulfill. where many of his childhood friends had gone on to do better things, make futures for themselves, coltan had been more than content to just making things. the modest powers of the magi lent themselves well to his childhood hobby and future occupation. he liked making small little mechanical birds and enchanting them so that they could fly. the solution was perhaps only temporary, but those brief moments of flight were enough for him to be envious of.
with no mother and no siblings to occupy his days with, colt either helped his dad in the shop or made his own little inventions in his free time. the modest sleeping arrangements that he and his father shared were simply in the upper floor of the little shop, and as a young child the number of places he could go while his father was working were few and far between. he was only as lonely as he let himself be, but as a child he was happy.
things started to change on a stormy evening when he was fourteen. his father had asked him to take a few things out to the doc, and despite perhaps being just a little bit too heavy for him at the time, coltan had been eager to please and more than happy to do as his father had asked. it was a lack of foresight that had placed the unfortunate rope in his path and only the worst of luck sent him tumbling into the stormy waves, caught on the heavy scrap material he'd been carrying. he would have drowned that night had he not met leven asher, a quenya who from that point on became a trusted friend.
colt immediately took to the boy, his curiosity never at rest. he would spend all day asking levi questions, and he would spend all night laying awake and pondering the answers. for once there was something, someone, that puzzled him to no end and no matter how he thought about it, he simply couldn't figure levi out. it was... intoxicating.
the quenya quickly became a permanent fixing in colt's life and when greater things started to develop between them, it almost came as no surprise at all. they fell into a romance with one another like they did most things, smiling and laughing with the occasional fumble that was never too difficult to get back up from again. colt's father easily accepted levi almost as a son and life was good.
it wasn't until coltan turned twenty that things changed again. it was another stormy evening, one in which they should have known better than to tempt fate by going out onto the docks. levi had already disappeared into the ocean for the night several hours prior and would not have been expected to be seen until well into the morning of the next day. it was an experiment, and invention, that needed the strength of the angry waves to test, and the results were splendid, just what they had predicted... until the chord keeping coltan's father tethered to the docks snapped, and he was swallowed into the sea.
things were... different after that, perhaps only marginally so.. but still different. the small shop somehow felt so big, and the tasks set before him immeasurable. it was a strange and cripple bought of depression that followed colt like a cloud after that, and had it not been for levi by his side, he might have been tempted to join his father in the raging waters of the sea. for maybe a year the workshop went untouched, the inventions remained uninvented.
but all things must eventually come to an end, and as time was left to slowly heal the wound left by his father's death, coltan's forever burning curiosity had risen within him again. the gloom faded and the whimsical fantasies brought to reality by his always tinkering mind would no longer remain in the dusty crevices of his imagination. without his father there, colt took over the shop with renewed determination.
he's hardworking to a fault, but that perhaps is not only his biggest strength, but also his biggest downfall. he cares so deeply about others that he often forgets to care for himself. his curiosity easily leads him down the path of being too nosy, but what he lacks in in his ability commit to one project at a time he makes up for in his naturally inquisitive nature. he's incredibly creative to a fault and never leaves any detail unattended. at the same time, coltan is incredibly disorganized and messy, but always knows where to find what he's looking for. he's stubborn, never wanting to give up the fight even when it's lost, and maybe just a little bit too observant of the world around him for his own good.
despite the fact that he requires so much sleep, colt often forgets and very rarely does he actually sleep during normal times of the day. it's not that uncommon for the tinkerer to stay up into the wee hours of the morning, only to sleep the day away with levi cuddled up at his side. he's found a rhythm in his life - riddled with staccatos and dramatic pauses, sure - and with a little help from his favorite fishy, he's learned to make the best of it.
