biography
Life was good. The ocean was a kind mistress that provided food, shelter and company. Why should he ever leave? Levi was comfortable here . It was home. It was safe - why would anyone leave? It’s oh so easy to simply fall back on habits and instincts when he swims around in the school. Everything is already calculated, and it’s like everyone has one collective mind. Safety in numbers. Always safety. He couldn’t care less for the surface and the people that lived on dry land, why should he? Even if he was quenya he wouldn’t want to change - the ocean was home. Safe.
Though it was surprisingly easy to be tempted to stray now and then, when his siblings were bold. Still he never considered joining them on the surface. The world above was scary and unfamiliar, and he liked the shelter the ocean gave him.
Though one day, when the ocean was angry and was making it difficult to swim, a human suddenly crashed through the waves. Whatever Leven had been doing was quickly forgotten. But he wasn’t necessarily scared, if anything he was curious, and quickly realised that the human couldn’t breathe underwater - and that he was stuck. That was the first time the quenya changed shape, fully intend on helping the drowning human, but with his current form too small he had to do something.
The ocean clearly wasn’t merciful to humans, that was something Leven learnt quickly. It took him a moment to get the other free and up to the surface. The quenya thought it would be the first and last time he ever changed shape, but he was proved wrong. Oh so wrong. The human, Coltan, would suddenly start to pay him visits, and it didn’t take long for Leven to start spending the days on land and the nights in the ocean. Coltan was… new, he was interesting and he was so incredibly different from what Leven was used to - but they became close friends as time passed.
Soon, Levi would start straying further away from the docs and explore the city - Paralia, and though his heart soared with joy every moment spent with Colt, the nights were terribly lonesome and cold. The school didn’t interest him anymore - only Colt did. As time passed and they grew older, they seemed to drift closer and strayed from friendship to something more, and Levi didn’t hesitate to throw himself into a new chapter of his life, one he thought he would never experience.
But it wasn’t just fun and games. When Colt lost his father to the ocean, Levi felt angry at his home for the first time. He couldn’t understand why she would do such a thing - to hurt the one he loved the most - and in childish retaliation, he didn’t return home for almost a year. Instead, he would spend the nights in Colt’s tub. It was a little degrading and difficult, but Levi was angry at the ocean while at the same time wanting to be there for his loved one. He never pressured Colt into going back to the workshop, and eventually learnt the meaning of cuddling.
Though as soon as his human returned to his inventions, so did he return to the sea. And what a strange and joyous feeling that was. But the ocean was no longer his home - home was where Colt was, and the ocean merely became a place where Levi slept, nothing more and nothing less. He was very slowly adapting to a life on shore and realised one day that he wouldn’t trade his current life for anything.
If he did, then who would take care of Colt, after all? and he seriously doubts anyone will ever match up to his daily cuddling needs. As far as Levi is concerned, there is no one but Colt that makes this life worth living - and he’s grateful for that fact every day. The quenya doesn’t have any formal education and is therefore excluded from having a proper job - which is why he has just… more or less casually specialised himself in helping Colt with whatever he needs… as well as serving as his living reminder to help him remember to eat and take pauses from his work.
It’s a simple life. But it’s a good one. Safe.
