biography
Daphne knows nothing about her father. Not his name, not his hair color, eye color, or anything of the sort. She's grown up with the dream of the ideal father, a tall and kind man who would let his little girl dance on his feet to his favorite song. But, the woman will probably never know her father. She doesn't even know if he's alive. That's a hope she usually keeps to herself though, there's no need to expose her dreams to the harshness of the world now is there.
Her childhood wasn't all that bad though, her mother was loving enough for two parents. Plus, she also had her grandmother and grew up with her cousin Victoria as her best friend. Her aunt Valeria was a little bit of a different story. Valeria was already hesitant of the daughter her sister had bore when she didn't follow their naming tradition. It was obvious to anyone what their tradition was, so why didn't her sister follow it? She had followed it when Victoria was born, even naming her after their own mother. It was obviously who would be the trained as the successor, Valeria had followed tradition. Tradition was important in their family.
But no.
Veronica was the older twin by a minute. Thus, this meant her bastard daughter would become head of the family one day. A daughter that simply sounded like she didn't belong. However, Daphne's aunt managed to keep all of this malice and rage inside of her for many years, continuing to suck up to her mother and play nice with her sister and niece. All the while, grooming Victoria to hopefully take the place as head of the family. Daphne and Victoria had no idea of this going on, they were young and carefree girls who found the pleasure in using their weak powers to help flowers and plants grow.
Their powers started out weak obviously, they needed to train and and learn new concepts for their magic. Grow in their powers. Veronica wasn't too concerned when her daughter was rather clumsy with her powers at the beginning, but as she got older the concern did start to grow. Around the time they were seven years old a magi in their family usually began to show their full potential. Victoria did, but Daphne did not. Her spells fizzled while her cousin's sparkled. Daphne's were dull while Victoria's were vivacious. This delighted Valeria greatly, and began to worry Veronica.
Daphne began to have extra lessons from her grandmother and mother, to see if she perhaps a late bloomer. But at ten when Victoria was starting to learn complicated spells, Daphne was just mastering the beginning spell of creating a small spark of light. Now her mother was worried. If Daphne didn't show signs of improving, then the line for head of the family would transfer over to Valeria. Her mother expressed this concern to her daughter and though she didn't exactly understand what was so bad about her aunt being the head, the desire to please her mother was greater.
Daphne worked and worked, long into the nights as she got older, but could never catch up to Veronica. Finally, when they were sixteen, her cousin left her in the dust. Veronica was in a whole different league, surpassing where most magi were at this point in their magic. Daphne was still learning the basics. She felt horrible that she had disappointed her mother, and even though Daphne still worked and worked as hard as she could, she was not improving. When they were eighteen, that was when the deciding moment would be.
With these strange circumstances, a duel between the cousins would need to take place. Not to the death, but to the pain. It was plainly obvious who would be the winner, but Daphne was determined to go through with it anyway. That is before her aunt intervened. She came to her niece, filled with fake worry and concern the night before the duel and begged Daphne to leave the home quickly. She had overhead Victoria saying she was planning on killing Daphne in the duel, that nothing would stop her from taking the place of head. Daphne was surprised and hurt deeply at this information, but why would her aunt lie to her? After all, they were family. Daphne wanted to speak to her mother about this, but her aunt urged her to leave right away as there was no time. Daphne was conflicted, but took her aunt's pleas to heart, packed a bag, and left that night.
The young woman traveled around for a while, always wanting to go back home, but managed to receive a message from her aunt telling her to stay away. Everyone knew she was alive, but if she came back she would not be as Victoria made it clear that she would kill her cousin if she ever set foot on their property ever again. Daphne was heartbroken, but trusted this was the best thing to do. She continued traveling for a while, until finally feeling the pull to settle down in the small town of Paralia. After about a year or so living in the town, Daphne opened up a small gift shops of sorts. It has a variety of trinkets and interesting items that she's found in her travels as well as the plants and herbs she grows.
